The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency has signed a $43 million contract with Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace to upgrade sensors on the Skjold-class corvettes.
According to Naval News, the upgrade includes enhanced fire-control radars and new electro-optical sensors for four vessels, as well as their integration into existing combat systems.
The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency said the improvements will strengthen the ships’ ability to detect and track targets, including smaller and faster threats such as drones, while the vessels’ 76 mm guns will also be able to deliver accurate fire in the coming years.
“This contract is an important contribution to ensuring that the Skjold class remains a relevant and combat-capable asset in the years ahead,” said Stein Håvard Bergstad, Head of Maritime Capabilities at the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency.
The project will begin immediately, with installation of the first system planned for later this year. The measures are part of a broader modernization of the Skjold class and will help keep the vessels operational and relevant until new standardized ships and other capabilities under the Fleet Plan 2024 come into effect.
“We are pleased to continue our work with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency on the Skjold class to support and strengthen the fleet’s operational capability and availability,” said Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President of Defence Systems at Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace.
